15. Uli Kirchler

Media: Scrollsawing , sculpting, woodworking

Artist’s Statement: I shape and sculpt Westcoast woods using found materials for inlays: eggshells from my hens, the aluminum frame from my broken lawn chair, twigs, rocks I find … With the flick of a wrist all towers of my castles and cities pop out of a chunk of wood, with one tap they disappear. Woodworking has been the focus of my creative energies for over 25 years. I had no formal training, relying instead on my imagination and my fascination with the beauty of wood as a means of honing my skills. Sustainability is very important to me. I feel best when I can add value to a piece of wood that in most circumstances would be discarded. I use the entire tree: the lumber to shape and sculpt, twigs and sawdust for inlays, and the cutoffs for my castles.
