Media: Egg tempera

Artist’s Statement: I began training in classical Byzantine iconography in the fall of 2022, with Portland’s Classical Iconography Institute. Switching from my preferred medium of acrylic paint, to the traditional egg tempera was a learning curve. Powdered pigments are mixed with egg yolk, vinegar, and water at varying thicknesses, then meticulously layered on white gesso board. One icon could have hundreds of layers of color! Beyond the layering of pigment, the geometry and symbolism of icons is equally fascinating. Iconography is a visual language used throughout history to convey themes, stories, and messages. As I grow in my skill and knowledge, I look forward to sharing this ancient art form with a modern audience.
