WCAA Mentorship Program:

Why it matters and progress updates- cold glass, ceramics, and silver clay

Art mentorships with the WCAA aren’t just about improving or learning a new skill- they’re about building community, nurturing creativity, and keeping traditions alive. There are so many things mentees can benefit from when applying for this free program, for example:

Aside from mentors teaching their specific art medium, mentors can provide guidance on how to approach the creative process, how to begin showing in galleries or even the basics, such as color theory and why it matters.

Mentorships also create a safe space for experimentation and growth, with mentors providing insight and encouragement so that mentees stay true to their artistic and unique voice.

Often, many think of programs like these only benefiting the mentee however, we have also found that mentors find inspiration by seeing art with fresh eyes as well!

Ultimately, the mentorships are an exchange of energy, wisdom, and encouragement that strengthens the community and passes on the creative torch for those in pursuit of something more.

Here are some mentorships in process:

Sharon and Marcia- Cold glass (stained glass)
Artist Sharon has been mentoring Marcia on a beautiful stained glass piece. Marcia shared that she is enjoying diving deeper into the stained glass process and has been learning a lot along the way. Marcia has been enjoying the challenge!

Jennifer and Yogi- Ceramics
Artist Jennifer shares: “Yogi has never worked with Clay and just wanted to try it. He decided to make nesting dolls so the first day he brought a sketch and we worked together to figure out how to build them. Today they are drying and after the first firing they will get faces and clear glaze. He has the best attitude and is happy no matter how they turn out because the new experience is what he wanted.”

Denise and Amber- Silver Clay
Miss Amber had the pleasure of mentoring with Denise Hershey, learning how to make jewelry with precious metal clay. Amber made a pair of fine silver earrings and a fine silver pendant. She learned basic techniques in silver clay as well as how to patina the pieces, making them different colors.

Thank you to all of the artist mentors for volunteering their time and knowledge- and to the mentees that followed the creative pull to try something new!!

Keep an eye out for more mentorship spotlights coming soon- until then, happy creating!
