Media: Oil paint

Artist’s Statement: My Unseen Hearts series depicts animals based on the myths of our first peoples. These stories summarize thousands of years of earned wisdom about how to live. As much as possible I gather my own reference photos from my adventures. When creating the painting, I see the animal as made up of hundreds of smaller shapes. Often these shapes are hearts, hidden in the fur or the scales. I accentuate the hearts I see in different ways to anthropomorphize the animals slightly, nudging viewers towards connection with wildness. I create multiple works concurrently at my home studio in Portland, Oregon. The paintings have bespoke frames, often built with materials that deepen our connection to the myths depicted.
