Media: oil on canvas
Artist’s Statement: Joaquin Raven Artist Statement I am a contemporary oil painter creating wild animal portraits to show structure and spontaneity in the same moment. I’m interested in how a surface can absorb emotions, and I believe that every painting is a form of self portrait. My paintings grow out of long periods of looking and reworking, condensing large amounts of time and attention into one present moment. Transformation and balance are central ideas to my inspiration and process. Gestural marks sit alongside more structured elements, revealing an ongoing tension between control and acceptance. I know my works are complete when the tightness of the focal point balances perfectly with the flow of their environment.
