Mentorship Program 2023

We expanded our mentorship program in 2023, thanks to a grant from the Cultural Coalition of Washington County. The mentors are artists from the tour. Applications were accepted until June 30th, 2023. We received 24 applicants for the 6 mentorships, far more than we have had in past years. Some of the mentors offered to accept a second student but even so we were only able to place less than half of the applicants in a mentorship.

These are the mentorships that were completed in 2023.

6th Grade Ceramics with Linda and David Jerome

Local potters, Dave and Linda Jerome, were able to work with a 6th grade class from St.
Matthews school in Hillsboro early in March, funded by a mentorship grant from CCWC.
Linda describes the experience, “The ancient civilizations unit the 6th grade class had been
studying was a perfect tie in for learning to build coil pots. Using a buff colored mid fire clay, we had the students make small coil pots, decorate them with textures and colored underglazes, and then we clear glazed them. It was a big success for us, the students were so attentive and enthusiastic. The pots all turned out wonderfully. They were really excited to have them displayed at the Walter’s Cultural Arts Center along with the Open Studios artists. “
